KSrelief Performs 28 Cochlear Surgeries in Kenya

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) has successfully conducted 28 cochlear implant surgeries for children in Kenya, marking a significant stride in the organisation’s ongoing efforts to improve access to specialised healthcare across underserved regions.

The surgeries, carried out by a team of Saudi volunteer medics, were part of the Saudi Sama’a Volunteer Program, a broader initiative focused on auditory rehabilitation for children from Kenya and Somalia. All 28 operations were completed successfully.

Beyond the surgical procedures, the mission also included follow-up speech and language rehabilitation services. Additionally, 28 targeted education sessions were organised for the families of the young recipients, benefiting over 50 individuals.

The programme featured 20 volunteers drawn from diverse medical disciplines, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defines KSrelief’s global outreach.

With hearing loss among children remaining a major public health challenge in many parts of Africa, the intervention has been hailed by local healthcare observers as a timely and transformative initiative.

Founded in 2015 by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, KSrelief serves as Saudi Arabia’s primary humanitarian arm. It is headed by Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah who serves as the Supervisor General. The organisation is mandated to deliver aid and disaster relief worldwide, guided by principles of neutrality and transparency.

Since its launch, KSrelief has carried out 3,389 projects worth almost $7.9 billion across 106 countries, in partnership with over 300 organizations including international and local agencies to provide food, medical aid, shelter, education, and emergency response. From Yemen and Syria to sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, KSrelief has earned recognition as one of the Middle East’s most active humanitarian institutions.

In recent years, its growing portfolio has included increasingly complex interventions like cochlear implants, designed not just to save lives, but to restore quality of life, particularly among vulnerable children.
