Indonesia and Egypt Strengthen Partnership to Promote Moderate Islam and Combat Extremism

By Abdullahi Yusuf

Indonesia and Egypt have committed to promoting moderate Islam as a shared strategy to counter extremism and combat Islamophobia worldwide.

This joint effort was highlighted during a bilateral meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the presidential palace in Cairo.

President Prabowo expressed his strong support for promoting Islam as a religion of peace and tolerance. “We are committed to preserving and promoting a moderate version of Islam—one that fosters tolerance, protects all people, and is not rooted in suspicion or hatred,” he stated.

He emphasized that Islam is inherently peaceful and that its positive values must be showcased globally to counter misconceptions. “We must dispel any suspicion or phobia against Islam. In principle, Islam is full of peace,” President Prabowo stressed.

The leaders also discussed expanding cooperation beyond religious matters to other strategic sectors, including trade, industry, technology, education, tourism, and defense.

In the area of education, President Prabowo thanked President El-Sisi for the hospitality extended to Indonesian students in Egypt, noting that over 15,000 Indonesian students are currently studying in Egypt, with many enrolled at the prestigious Al-Azhar University. He expressed hopes for further growth in bilateral educational exchanges.

The Indonesian leader’s visit to Cairo follows his arrival on Tuesday (December 17) for the Developing-8 (D-8) Summit and other key engagements. In addition to meeting President El-Sisi, President Prabowo also met with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and Indonesian students at Al-Azhar University on Wednesday.

This collaboration signals a deeper partnership between Indonesia and Egypt in their shared mission to promote a peaceful, tolerant interpretation of Islam globally.
