Golden Words of Allah (episode 25)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise be to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Allah says concerning; Ablution (wudu)

Introduction.
Ablution, or wudu’, is the cornerstone of spiritual purity in Islam, serving as a prerequisite for the validity of prayer. It is not merely a physical act of washing but a profound ritual symbolizing the cleansing of sins and the preparation to stand in the presence of Allah. The Quran commands believers to perform wudu’ with care and precision, highlighting its importance in attaining both physical and spiritual cleanliness. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned against negligence, saying, “Woe to the heels of Hellfire because of not being washed properly during ablution.” This stern reminder underscores that rushing or performing wudu’ carelessly can have dire consequences in the Hereafter, while those who perfect it are promised forgiveness, elevation in rank, and luminous marks on the Day of Judgment. Thus, wudu’ is more than an obligation, it is a sacred act of devotion, purification, and preparation for divine acceptance.

1. Quranic Command for Ablution.
The Quran establishes ablution as a mandatory act before prayer and certain states of impurity:
Quranic reference: “O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah (sexual impurity), then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have touched women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favour upon you that you may be grateful.”— Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6).

Hadith references: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the obligation of ablution as prescribed in the Quran:

• “Allah does not accept the prayer of any one of you if he becomes impure until he performs ablution.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 695, Sahih Muslim 225.
• Ibn Abbas reported: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ’Purity is half of faith.’” — Sahih Muslim 223

 2. Spiritual Importance of Ablution.
Ablution is not merely a physical cleansing but also a spiritual purification that prepares a Muslim for prayer and other acts of worship. The Quran links cleanliness to faith:
Quranic reference: “Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:222).
Hadith reference, Abu Huraira narrated “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ‘When a servant performs ablution, as he washes his face, every sin he looked at with his eyes is washed away; as he washes his hands, every sin his hands committed is washed away; and as he washes his feet, every sin his feet walked towards is washed away, until he emerges purified of sins.’” — Sahih Muslim 244.

Ablution Elevates One Spiritually: “Shall I not tell you of something by which Allah erases sins and raises you in rank? Performing ablution properly even in difficult circumstances.” — Sahih Muslim 251.

3. Warnings Against Rushing or Neglecting Ablution.
Neglecting Proper Ablution:
The Prophet warned against carelessness in ablution, especially regarding washing the feet.
Hadith reference: “Woe to the heels (of Hellfire) because of not being washed properly during ablution.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 60, Muslim 241.
Punishment in the Hereafter:
Those who neglect or rush their ablution risk invalidating their prayers, depriving themselves of blessings, and incurring divine displeasure. Hellfire is specifically mentioned for incomplete ablution as it reflects disregard for Allah’s commandments.

 4. The Connection Between Ablution and Light on the Day of Judgment.
Ablution as a Sign of the Believers:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described the unique marks of believers from ablution.
Hadith reference: “My Ummah will be called on the Day of Judgment with bright faces, hands, and feet from the traces of ablution. So, whoever can increase the area of brightness, let him do so.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 136, Sahih Muslim 246

 5. Ablution as a Means of Forgiveness and Elevation.
Forgiveness of Sins:
Ablution cleanses not only the body but also the soul. It wipes away sins and prepares a believer to stand before Allah with humility and purity.
Hadith reference: “Shall I not tell you something by which Allah erases sins and raises ranks? Performing ablution well in difficulty, taking many steps to the mosque, and waiting for one prayer after another. This is the ribat (struggle in Allah’s cause).” — Sahih Muslim 251.
Spiritual Rewards:
The conscious effort to perform ablution properly is rewarded by Allah with an elevated spiritual rank and closeness to Him.
“The Prophet said, ‘The key to Paradise is prayer, and the key to prayer is purification.’” — Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 4

 6. Ablution as a Sign of Gratitude and Obedience:
Ablution reflects obedience to Allah’s commands and gratitude for His blessings. It reminds believers of their dependence on Him for physical and spiritual purification. The Quran links this act to Allah’s mercy and favor.
Quranic reference: “Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favour upon you that you may be grateful.” — Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6).
Gratitude to Allah, hadith reference: “Whoever performs ablution as I do and then prays two rak’ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his past sins will be forgiven.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 159, Sahih Muslim 226

Summary
