Erdoğan: ‘Terror-Free Türkiye’ Is Unstoppable as Malazgirt Spirit Returns
Turkish president invokes 1071 victory, vows to resist pressure and push region towards peace and stability

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to press ahead with his “Terror-Free Türkiye” agenda, saying Ankara will not bow to external pressure when the country’s security, sovereignty and future are at stake.
Erdoğan made the remarks on Wednesday at a ceremony marking the 955th anniversary of the Battle of Malazgirt in Muş, eastern Türkiye, linking the historic 1071 victory to what he described as the country’s determination to remain strong and united amid current regional challenges.
“We tied up our horse’s tail to achieve our goals of a Terror-Free Türkiye and a terror-free region,” Erdoğan told the gathering, using a traditional expression associated with determination to see a difficult undertaking through.
He said Türkiye had “no choice” but to remain powerful and united, while expressing his determination to see the wider region become “a land of peace and well-being once again.”
The president also warned those attempting to obstruct Türkiye’s direction through what he described as “traps and provocations”.
“Those who think they can stop Türkiye’s and the Turkish nation’s blessed march through traps and provocations are doomed to disappointment,” he said.
Erdoğan further stressed that Ankara would not compromise when the country’s future was involved.
“We never bow before anyone else if the future of our homeland, our state and our nation is at stake,” he said.
The speech linked the annual Malazgirt commemoration at the intersection of historical memory and Türkiye’s present security and regional policy.
The 1071 Battle of Malazgirt, in which Seljuk forces led by Sultan Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantine army, is regarded as a pivotal moment in the opening of Anatolia to Turkish settlement.
For Erdoğan, the anniversary remains more than a commemoration of a medieval victory. His address repeatedly invoked the unity and determination associated with Malazgirt while connecting them to contemporary efforts to reshape Türkiye’s security environment.
Earlier in the commemorations, Erdoğan had also said that the completion of the “Terror-Free Türkiye” process would open the door to a new era for the country, arguing that peace and stability would ultimately benefit both Türkiye and the wider region.
The president’s comments come as Ankara continues to pursue its stated objective of eliminating terrorism inside Türkiye and contributing to a “terror-free region”. Turkish officials have also linked developments in neighbouring Syria to that wider objective.
The Malazgirt ceremony therefore served two purposes: commemorating a defining victory in Turkish history while reinforcing Erdoğan’s contemporary message of national unity, security and regional stability.
His broader message was that the spirit associated with Malazgirt remains relevant to Türkiye’s present course, as Ankara seeks to combine national strength with what the president described as a drive towards a more peaceful and stable region.
