Erdogan Offers Türkiye’s Support for Gaza Ceasefire Efforts

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Türkiye is prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza. He also welcomed the recently implemented ceasefire agreement in Lebanon.

Türkiye has been vocal in its criticism of Israel’s military actions in both Gaza and Lebanon. In past engagements, Ankara discussed a potential truce in Gaza with Hamas, offering the group guidance on negotiating strategies.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized renewed American efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, naming Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar, and Israel among the key players involved.

“We are declaring that Türkiye stands ready to assist in halting the massacre in Gaza and establishing a durable ceasefire,” Erdogan stated during a parliamentary meeting with members of his ruling AK Party.

A Turkish official, responding to Biden’s comments, stressed that a ceasefire in Lebanon alone would not ensure regional stability. The official reiterated Türkiye’s readiness to facilitate negotiations for a Gaza truce, similar to its involvement in earlier peace initiatives. “We are once again prepared to support efforts for a permanent ceasefire and lasting solution in Gaza,” the official said.

Despite sharp exchanges with Israel since the Gaza conflict began, Türkiye has maintained formal diplomatic ties. Unlike Israel and many Western nations, Türkiye does not classify Hamas as a terrorist organization and regularly hosts senior members of the group.
