Erdogan Arrives Egypt for Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit on Gaza

Turkish president joins world powers in talks aimed at consolidating Gaza ceasefire and advancing regional stability

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan departed for Egypt on Monday to attend the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit on Gaza, organized at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump.

Erdogan was seen off at Esenboga Airport in Ankara by Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Presidential Chief of Staff Hakki Susmaz, and Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin.

He was accompanied by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, National Intelligence Organization head Ibrahim Kalin, Communications Director Burhanettin Duran, and chief foreign policy advisor Akif Cagatay Kilic.

The summit, hosted in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, aims to consolidate the recently reached Gaza ceasefire and advance efforts toward lasting regional peace and stability. More than 20 world leaders are expected to attend.

Erdogan is scheduled to deliver an address at the summit and hold bilateral consultations with several participating leaders.

The talks follow Trump’s announcement of a 20-point Gaza peace plan, which includes the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, along with a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.

The plan’s second phase envisions forming a new governing authority in Gaza, deploying a multinational peacekeeping force, and disarming Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed more than 67,800 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children, rendering much of the enclave uninhabitable.
