JAMB identifies new tactics by candidates to rewrite UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has identified new deceptive tactics by candidates aiming to rewrite the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
This was disclosed in JAMB’s 2024 policy document signed by its Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, and unveiled at the 2024 JAMB Policy meeting in Abuja.
Previously, candidates would submit fake medical reports claiming illness as the reason for missing the exam. However, Oloyede revealed that the new tactic involves candidates falsely claiming to have been kidnapped.
“Claim of kidnap is the new trend of lies by candidates who were absent during examination,” Oloyede said. He noted that some students, anticipating poor performance, would fabricate abduction stories.
Additionally, some parents are complicit in these deceptions. Oloyede recounted an instance where a father claimed his son had been kidnapped in Wuse, Abuja, but managed to escape and reach the examination center late.
These revelations highlight the ongoing challenges JAMB faces in ensuring the integrity of the UTME process.
