Muslim clerics, political leaders and the movers shakers of Nigeria converge in Lekki for a solemn nikaah marked by prayers, counsel and calls for a faith-centred home

A cross-section of Muslim clerics, political leaders and crème de la crème of Nigeria gathered in Lagos as the Oyefeso and Oladeji families joined their children in marriage during a formal Islamic wedding ceremony held in the Lekki area of the city.
The Aqdu-n-Nikaah of Aishat Oyindamola Oladeji and AbdulBasit Adetokunbo Oyefeso which took place on a Tuesday mid January 2026, at The Orchid Hotel, drawing guests from within Nigeria and abroad despite the weekday schedule.
Peace Magazine learned that the ceremony was deliberately structured to reflect strict adherence to Islamic principles, with clerics and family elders placing strong emphasis on faith, responsibility and moral discipline in marriage.
The bride is the daughter of Alhaji Abdulkabir and Alhaja Saidat Oladeji, while the groom is the son of Alhaji Musbau and Alhaja Fatymah Oyefeso. Family representatives said the union also formalised a relationship between the two households that had developed over many years through shared religious and community engagements.
The Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaiman Oluwatoyin Abou-Nolla, officiated the marriage, formally pronouncing the couple husband and wife and leading prayers for peace, stability and divine guidance in their home.
Delivering a sermon at the ceremony, Islamic scholar and former Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation chairman, Dr. AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, described marriage as an act of worship anchored in compassion, trust and accountability. He advised the couple to practice patience, forgiveness and fear of Allah, noting that marital success depends on commitment to the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
Among those present were former Ogun State Governor and Senator Ibikunle Amosun; Senator representing Lagos West, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, accompanied by her husband, Alhaji Saheed Adebule; Mrs. Oluwakemi Alausa, wife of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa; and the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Alhaji Akeem Babatunde Shittu, who presided over the reception.
Religious leaders in attendance included Sheikh Ahmad Ibrahim Al-Mukhtar, founder of the Muhammad Rosulullah Global Family; former National Hajj Commission chairman, Sheikh Zikrullah Hassan; and Professor Tajudeen Yusuf, President of the Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals. Muslim organisations such as The Companion and The Criterion were also represented, led by senior national executives.
The families’ long-standing roles within the Muslim community were highlighted during the programme. The bride’s father, Alhaji Oladeji Semiu, currently serves as president of the Nigerian Muslim Community in Winnipeg, Canada. The groom’s parents are former national leaders of Muslim organisations and hold traditional religious titles in Ijebu land.
In goodwill messages, Senator Adebule urged the groom to prioritise care, discretion and responsibility toward his wife, while Mrs. Alausa spoke on the importance of consistent prayer and reliance on Allah during moments of trial. Drawing from personal experience, she encouraged the couple to maintain spiritual discipline throughout their marriage.
Shittu, who chaired the event, reminded the couple that marriage is both a religious obligation and a prophetic tradition, citing Qur’anic principles of tranquility and mercy. He advised both partners to cultivate respect, understanding and forgiveness in their home.
Speaking on behalf of the families, the bride’s father described the wedding as the culmination of a friendship between the two households that spanned more than a decade. The groom’s mother expressed gratitude to guests and encouraged the couple to remain patient, humble and prayerful.
After the ceremony, the groom said he was grateful to have found a partner who shared his commitment to faith and the Qur’an, while the bride described the marriage as the completion of “half of her faith,” expressing optimism about building a home grounded in Islamic values.

Jubril AbdulKarem; Prof. Fatima AbdulKarem; Alhaja Sherifah Aregbesola; Alhaji Jubril Aremu Gawat, senior special assistant on new media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Ustadh Abdulhameed Danmole of the Muslim Information Centre of Nigeria; media executives, legal practitioners and senior clerics from across Lagos.
