2026 Hajj: NAHCON Defends Mina, Arafat Arrangements Amid Growing Concerns

Nigeria’s National Hajj Commission has moved to calm growing concerns over accommodation arrangements for pilgrims in Mina and Arafat ahead of the 2026 Hajj, following reports attributed to a State Pilgrims’ Welfare Board questioning the standard of facilities being prepared for Nigerian contingents in Saudi Arabia.

In a strongly worded statement, the management of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria acknowledged that issues could arise during preparations for an operation as “large and complex” as the annual Islamic pilgrimage, but stressed that dialogue and consultation rather than public confrontation, remained the most effective way to resolve operational concerns.

The Commission said the allocation and selection of service providers responsible for pilgrims’ welfare in the Mashair areas which include Mina and Arafat, were not imposed unilaterally by the federal body, but were instead shaped largely by preferences expressed by participating states during consultations held ahead of the pilgrimage season.

NAHCON stated that it respected the collective decisions reached during those engagements, insisting that the arrangements were made in the interest of operational harmony and the welfare of pilgrims expected to travel from across Nigeria for the sacred rites.

The statement appears to signal an attempt by the Commission to contain tensions among stakeholders involved in Hajj coordination, amid indications that some state officials remain dissatisfied with aspects of the accommodation structure being put in place for their pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.

Without naming any particular state board, the Commission urged State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and officials to avoid what it described as premature recourse to the media over concerns it said were already being addressed through established operational channels.

Instead, the Commission called for what it termed “solution-driven engagement” with service providers, encouraging state authorities to work directly with officials on ground in order to identify deficiencies, improve arrangements where necessary, and safeguard the comfort and safety of pilgrims.

Mina and Arafat, two of the most sensitive and logistically demanding sites during Hajj, accommodate millions of pilgrims over a compressed period, making issues surrounding tents, transportation, feeding, sanitation, and crowd management central to the success of the exercise each year.

NAHCON further reassured intending Nigerian pilgrims that it would continue monitoring service delivery in the Mashair and maintain consultations with all relevant stakeholders to ensure what it described as a smooth and hitch-free Hajj operation.
