100+ Discover Islam at New York Mosque

An Islamic centre in Melville, New York, has opened its doors to more than 100 visitors during an “Open Mosque Day”, giving them an opportunity to explore Islam, learn about Islamic culture and gain a better understanding of the faith and the Muslim community.

The initiative was held at the Islamic Center in Melville in collaboration with the “Gain Peace” project, giving local residents an opportunity to enter the mosque, tour its facilities and learn directly about its activities, programmes and Islamic practices.

Visitors also explored the centre’s new community facility, which covers about 45,000 square feet and is nearing completion. The event provided an opportunity for members of the wider community to meet those who run and attend the centre and learn more about its role in serving Muslims and local residents.

Sally Hassan, vice president of the mosque, said the event was intended to help community members become familiar with the centre, its management and its congregation. She said the centre provides programmes for families and people of different age groups, including Sunday schools, educational camps and other community activities.

Dr. Sabeel Ahmed, executive director of the “Gain Peace” project, addressed the visitors on aspects of Islamic history and culture. He also answered questions about Islam, explaining its principles and values and addressing misconceptions about the religion.

Ahmed said “Gain Peace” participates in similar open mosque programmes in several US states, with the aim of helping non-Muslims learn about Islam and creating opportunities for dialogue and mutual understanding between different communities.

Visitors received English translations of the Qur’an and brochures containing the 50 most common questions and answers about Islam. They were also taken on guided tours of the prayer halls, classrooms, event hall and other facilities at the centre.

The outreach was not limited to Melville. On the same day, the Islamic Center in Hillside, New Hyde Park, held a separate open educational event in collaboration with the New York branch of the Islamic Circle of North America.

The events reflect efforts by Islamic institutions in the United States to open their doors to wider communities, provide accurate information about Islam and strengthen relationships between Muslims and their neighbours through direct dialogue and engagement.
