Qatar Awqaf Conducts Exam for 145 Muezzin Applicants

Ministry says exercise will help provide qualified callers to prayer for new mosques across the country

The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs in Qatar has conducted its third written examination for muezzin applicants in 2026, with 145 candidates taking part in the exercise.

The ministry said the examination forms part of its efforts to recruit qualified muezzins capable of delivering the call to prayer (adhan) in line with Islamic teachings and professional standards. It added that the initiative is aimed at meeting the growing needs of newly established mosques across the country.

According to the ministry, the examination is also designed to equip prospective muezzins with the religious knowledge and vocal skills required to perform the adhan effectively, while supporting the expanding role of mosques in religious guidance and community development.

Head of the Department of Imams, Preachers and Religious Scholars at the Mosques Administration, Ajyan Jaber Al Ahbabi, said the exercise was part of the ministry’s ongoing commitment to deploying qualified muezzins to newly opened mosques.

He explained that successful applicants are expected to possess a sound understanding of the Islamic rulings relating to the adhan, as well as the vocal ability needed to carry out the responsibility effectively.

Al Ahbabi described the adhan as one of Islam’s important religious symbols, noting that the muezzin occupies a vital position in calling Muslims to prayer. He said the role requires integrity, discipline and adequate knowledge of Islamic teachings.

He explained that the written examination covers subjects such as Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and Islamic creed (aqidah), while candidates who pass the first stage will proceed to an oral assessment in the Holy Quran.

According to him, the selection process is designed to identify candidates with the religious knowledge and practical abilities required to serve as muezzins.

The ministry, he added, remains committed to maintaining high standards in the performance of the adhan by recruiting competent personnel and preparing them to meet the current and future needs of mosques.

Al Ahbabi further said the ministry places strong emphasis on continuous training, performance monitoring and professional development to ensure muezzins maintain a high standard in carrying out their religious responsibilities.

The Ministry of Endowments also disclosed that muezzin examinations are conducted every three months as part of its long-term plan to meet the needs of new mosques. It added that the recruitment and assessment process is regularly reviewed to strengthen the quality of selection and build a pool of qualified muezzins across the country.
