Ghana’s VP Joins Thousands in Kumasi for Ashanti Regional Imam’s Burial

Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, joined thousands of Muslims in Kumasi on Wednesday for the burial prayers of the late Ashanti Regional Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, who passed away on Tuesday night at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after a brief illness. He was 74.

Dr. Bawumia, accompanied by his 2024 running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, several Members of Parliament, and senior government officials, arrived in Kumasi on Wednesday morning to pay his last respects.

In the company of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Dr. Bawumia visited the residence of the late Imam, where they offered condolences and prayers. The Janazah (Islamic funeral prayers) was later held at the Kumasi Central Mosque, drawing thousands of mourners from across the country.

Leading the prayer session, the National Chief Imam, alongside prominent Islamic clerics, prayed for Allah’s mercy and eternal rest for the late Sheikh Haroun.

Following the prayers, the late Imam was laid to rest at the Tafo Cemetery in Kumasi, in accordance with Islamic burial rites.

Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun was highly respected in the Muslim community for his spiritual leadership and decades of service to the Ummah. His passing marks a significant loss for the Islamic community in Ghana.
