#NigeriaForGaza: Muslim Organisations Unite to Demand Justice for Palestine
• The pro-Palestinian groups urged Nigerians of all faiths to stand in solidarity with the Palestinians, who have endured Israeli occupation since 1967, and advocate for justice on their behalf.
Muslim organisations in Nigeria, spearheaded by the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), have united to raise awareness about the ongoing genocide in Gaza, where over 45,000 Palestinians—predominantly women and children—have lost their lives. The coalition of groups, under the banner of #NigeriaForGaza, gathered at the Johnson Jakande Tinubu (JJT) Park, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, for a three-day programme aimed at highlighting the plight of Palestinians and demanding an end to the atrocities.
The solidarity event, described as the climax of the awareness campaign, brought together leaders and members of various Muslim organisations, civil rights advocates, and concerned individuals to show support for the Palestinian struggle. Among the key messages were calls for a global ceasefire, justice for Palestinians, and a boycott of companies that fund Israeli actions.
Mal. Kamor Disu, Executive Chairman of MPAC Nigeria, set the tone by addressing the gathering, emphasizing the resilience of the Palestinian people in the face of 75 years of oppression. He described the event as a platform to amplify voices against the occupation and apartheid system imposed by Israel.
“This gathering is not just about expressing outrage; it’s about standing together for justice, equality, and human rights,” Disu stated. “The Palestinian people’s courage and determination inspire us to continue advocating for their freedom.”
The event featured a variety of activities, including goodwill messages, panel discussions, and the distribution of educational materials to deepen public understanding of the situation in Gaza.
Prominent figures such as Jubril Folami (Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria), Hajia Mutiat Orolu-Balogun (Hijab Rights Advocacy Initiative), Comrade Qazim Iposun (The Academy), and Hajia Zaynab AbdurRazaq (Guild of Muslim Professionals) participated in panel sessions. They explored the historical, religious, and humanitarian dimensions of the Palestinian crisis and the role Nigerians can play in creating change.
Dr. Jubril Salaudeen, a financial expert, underscored the importance of exposing the injustices in Gaza. “We are here to demand justice and stand in solidarity with the oppressed. Islam teaches us to denounce injustice, no matter where it occurs,” he said.
One of the critical themes of the event was the advocacy for boycotts of companies funding Israeli military actions. Participants were encouraged to take practical steps to support Palestinians, such as avoiding brands complicit in the oppression and amplifying the Palestinian cause in their communities.
The Amir of MSSN Lagos, Mal. Kamoldeen Abiona, shared a message of hope for the Palestinians, citing their unwavering spirit as a beacon of resilience. He also highlighted the need for collective action, urging Muslims worldwide to unite in their efforts.
Comrade Qazim Iposun of The Academy expressed concern about the relatively low level of awareness in Nigeria compared to other nations. He attributed this partly to religious biases and called for stronger advocacy efforts to bridge the gap.
“We must champion this cause and invite individuals across all faiths to join the movement for Palestine, driven by a shared commitment to humanity,” he said.
The event concluded with a resounding call for justice and a message of hope for Palestine. MPAC and its partners vowed to continue their advocacy efforts, urging Nigerians to stay informed, take action, and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
“This is more than a gathering, it’s a movement for justice and humanity,” Mal. Kamor Disu emphasized. “We hope this marks the beginning of a stronger, united effort to end the oppression in Gaza.”
