JAMB Maintains Compact SOPs for All Operational Processes— PROF. OLOYEDE

As part of efforts aimed at strengthening the sanctity of its examination, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that it has a compact Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) embedded in the Training Manual issued to all its examination officials.

It also disclosed that the SOPs, drafted over two decades ago, were rolled out to take care of its examination administration process and were constantly being reviewed to accommodate contemporary happenings in line with global best practices.

The Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, stated this in his remarks during the Board’s monthly seminar series held at the JAMB Auditorium on Tuesday, March 10, 2025.

He pointed out that the training manual provides all necessary information required by officials engaged in the conduct of the Board’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

He noted that the training manual is all-encompassing as it takes care of all envisaged challenges as well as offers practical solutions to all contending issues that could emanate in the course of examination administration.

According to him, the SOPs include guidelines and checklists regarding the tasks to be performed in the course of conducting all Board’s assessment-related activities. In essence, the SOPs, as featured in the training manual, clearly articulate measures capable of remedying knotty issues as they arise.

“There is the training manual, which has been in place for the past 20 years. So, the fact that people panicked in certain situations does not obliterate the fact that there are no standard operating procedures.”

The training manual documents step-by-step instructions designed to help officials carry out complex routine operations consistently, safely, and efficiently. It also stresses timeliness, quality control, regulatory compliance, and helps to reduce errors with a view to ensuring a seamless examination process.

The explicitness of the training manual also addresses requirements for examination centres, pre- and post-examination activities, and the responsibilities of all stakeholders in the Board’s service value chain, including the roles of security agencies drafted to ensure compliance with all guidelines, rules, and regulations relating to the examination process.

For instance, in times of crisis or breakdown of law and order, the security personnel engaged by the Board—which include members of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and intelligence officers—are in place to provide security and maintain orderliness at the examination centres.

The training manual, no doubt, is a comprehensive document that provides guidance, serving as a barometer to appraise the successful conduct of all Board’s examinations, the release of results, as well as the subsequent placement of suitably qualified candidates for admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions.
