US defences strained by Iran drone and missile attacks
Wall Street Journal analysis says sustained assaults are testing Washington’s regional military posture.

The United States’ military resources in West Asia are under mounting pressure as Iran launches successive waves of drone and missile attacks across the region, according to an analysis published by the The Wall Street Journal.
The report said Tehran’s continued assaults on Israeli and US-linked targets are stretching Washington’s ability to defend personnel, embassies and strategic assets while pursuing its broader military objectives.
The analysis followed confirmation from US Central Command that six American service members were killed in a drone strike on a facility in Kuwait. On the same day, three US F-15 fighter jets were reported downed over the country.
Additional strikes were reported against US positions in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, while the US embassy in Riyadh sustained damage in an early morning drone attack.
The report said US forces face difficulties countering attacks spread across a wide geographic area, while coordinating air defence systems with regional partners.
It cited Ravi Chaudhary, a former assistant secretary of the US Air Force for installations, who said Iran’s arsenal of ballistic missiles, Shahed drones and electronic warfare systems poses a serious threat to American bases.
The analysis added that Iran’s ability to produce large numbers of low-cost drones could challenge US interceptor supplies, including systems such as Patriot and THAAD, potentially straining Washington’s defensive capabilities over time.
It also said maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil shipments, has been disrupted amid the escalation.
