Summit University honours Gbajabiamila Matriach at 96
President praises 96-year-old nursing pioneer as Summit University names proposed College of Nursing in her honour

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Alhaja Lateefat Olufunke Gbajabiamila on the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc. Honoris Causa) in Business Administration by Summit University, Offa, Kwara State, describing the honour as a fitting recognition of a lifetime of service, resilience and professional excellence.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president joined family members, friends and well-wishers in celebrating the 96-year-old United Kingdom trained nurse, who made history as the first female elected executive chairman of a local government in Lagos State.
Tinubu said Alhaja Gbajabiamila’s life and career exemplify commitment to public service, community development and the advancement of healthcare in Nigeria.
The president also commended Summit University for recognising her pioneering contributions to the nursing profession and for naming its proposed College of Nursing after her, describing the gesture as a lasting tribute to her lifelong dedication to healthcare delivery and human development.
“The naming of the Lateefat Gbajabiamila College of Nursing ensures that Mama Gbaja’s legacy of compassion, discipline and service will continue to inspire future generations of caregivers and leaders,” Tinubu said.
He further acknowledged her steadfast devotion to faith and community service through the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, noting her role in nurturing a family whose members have continued to distinguish themselves in public life.
The president paid special tribute to her son, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, citing the family’s sustained record of public service.
While rejoicing with the Gbajabiamila family on the occasion, which held recently in Lagos, surulere, Tinubu offered prayers for continued good health and strength for the nonagenarian.
He prayed that Almighty Allah would grant her “the abiding joy of witnessing the fruits of her lifelong labour for humanity.”
