Sakafia Islamic Senior High School Wins 2025 Zayed Sustainability Prize for Groundbreaking Aquaponics Project

Sakafia Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi, Ghana, has earned the prestigious 2025 Zayed Sustainability Prize in the Global High Schools – Sub-Saharan Africa category. The school was recognised for its transformative aquaponics project designed to tackle food insecurity while advancing sustainable agricultural practices within its community.

The initiative will implement an urban aquaponics system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics in a closed-loop setup, enabling efficient production of fish and vegetables. This innovative model significantly reduces water consumption, boosts food production, and minimises environmental impact, offering a sustainable and scalable solution to food security challenges in the region.

Dr. Lamya Fawwaz, Director of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, commended the project, stating: “By harnessing innovative techniques to address food security, Sakafia Islamic Senior High School exemplifies the role of education in driving sustainability. This project not only highlights the power of youth-led solutions but also underscores how schools can serve as hubs for transformative community impact.”

The Principal of Sakafia Islamic Senior High School, Hon. Mohamed Shahid, expressed his gratitude and optimism: “The Zayed Sustainability Prize will not only transform our school’s approach to sustainability but will also empower our students and community with the tools and knowledge to create lasting positive change.”

With the US $150,000 award, the school plans to integrate the aquaponics system into its curriculum, giving 50 students hands-on experience in sustainable farming. The project will directly benefit over 1,000 people by providing fresh produce and organising training workshops. It will also serve as a community engagement platform, raising awareness about sustainable agriculture among local farmers and families.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize celebrates organisations and schools making impactful contributions in Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action, and Global High Schools. Since its establishment, the Prize has positively affected over 407 million lives worldwide, honouring the visionary legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE.

The Global High Schools category, introduced in 2013, has recognised 56 schools from six regions: Sub-Saharan Africa, The Americas, Middle East & North Africa, Europe & Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia & Pacific. These winners have impacted more than 56,000 students and 480,000 community members globally, inspiring sustainable development across generations.
