Nigerian Sports Ministry Inaugurates Committee to Investigate Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games

In a bid to address past shortcomings and improve future performances, the committee will investigate critical issues including athlete exclusion, equipment challenges, and communication breakdowns experienced during the Games.

The Federal Ministry of Sports Development has officially inaugurated a seven-man committee tasked with investigating the shortcomings of Nigeria’s contingent at the recently concluded 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. The inauguration took place at the Media Centre of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, with Sports Minister, Senator John Owan Enoh, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in the nation’s sports sector.

The committee, chaired by Dr. Mumuni Alao, Group Managing Director of Complete Communications Limited, includes members Aliyu Mohammed (North-west), Hajia Rakiya Muhammed (North-central), Godwin Enakhena (South-south), Dr. Habu Abdulrahman Abu (North-east), Oyenka Nnene (South-east), and Victor Okangbe (South-south) as Secretary. Other officials from the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN)

In his address, Minister Enoh highlighted the purpose of the committee: “This committee is not just about finding faults; it’s about learning from our past to ensure we do not repeat mistakes.” He elaborated on Nigeria’s recent performances, which were marred by issues such as communication breakdowns, negative publicity, and inadequate athlete management.

The minister specifically pointed out key areas of concern, including the exclusion of athletes like Favor Ofili, controversies surrounding cycling equipment, and doping incidents that have tarnished Nigeria’s reputation on the international stage. He stated, “We must delve into these matters to prevent similar occurrences in future international competitions,” stressing the critical need for better athlete management and coordination.

Senator Enoh called for a thorough examination of the challenges faced by the Nigerian contingent, emphasizing that the country’s sports sector must embrace transparency and accountability. “We must learn from our past experiences,” he insisted, urging stakeholders to collaborate effectively to enhance Nigeria’s performance in future games.

Dr. Alao, in response, expressed gratitude for the appointment and reiterated the committee’s commitment to transparency: “We understand the assignment given to us. Our aim is to investigate the truth and present it to Nigerians, regardless of where it leads.”

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Mr. Olumide Bamiduro, Head of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development’s FEAD. He commended the committee members for their dedication and assured them of the ministry’s full support: “Your commitment is crucial for unraveling what transpired and for ensuring we improve before the next major games.”
