The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) expressed a fondness for pleasant scents and encouraged their use, highlighting their association with cleanliness and good company. However, during Ramadan, it’s essential to approach the use of perfumes with mindfulness and adherence to Islamic guidelines.

Applying perfume does not invalidate the fast. However, it’s advisable to avoid inhaling incense or powdered fragrances directly, as they contain particles that could reach the stomach through the nose.

While wearing perfume is permissible, excessive use is discouraged, especially during fasting hours. The wisdom behind fasting includes abstaining from indulgences, and overuse of fragrances may contradict this principle.

Women are advised against wearing perfume when going out, as it may attract undue attention. The Prophet (pbuh) emphasized modesty and cautioned against actions that could lead to unwanted attraction.

Maintaining cleanliness is paramount in Islam. Using lightly scented soaps or deodorants can help manage body odor without the need for strong perfumes.

Utilizing subtle fragrances at home, such as diffusing essential oils like lavender or chamomile, can create a calming atmosphere conducive to worship and reflection.

Saudi Arabia – More than 700,000 passengers have travelled on the Haramain High-Speed Railwaysince the start of Ramadan, according to the Transport General Authority. The high-speed rail line linking Mecca, Medina and Jeddah has operated more than 2,300 trips during the holy month, easing road congestion and helping millions of pilgrims travel between Islam’s holiest cities.

Nigeria – A resident of Jigawa State has returned a bag of rice distributed as Ramadan aid by federal lawmaker Usman Kamfani Auyo, describing the gesture as political manipulation. The man, identified as Lamara Sule Gunya, said in a video circulating online that accepting the gift was degrading and alleged the annual distribution was aimed at influencing voters.

United Arab Emirates – Authorities at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi have deployed additional buses and about 100 taxis as thousands of worshippers are expected during the final nights of Ramadan. Officials say preparations also include expanded transport and safety measures as large crowds gather for late-night Taraweeh and Tahajjud prayers.

Jerusalem – Eight Muslim-majority countries, including Qatar, Jordan, Indonesia, Türkiye, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have condemned Israel’s continued closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem during Ramadan. In a joint statement, the countries said restrictions on worshippers violate international law and the longstanding status quo at the holy site.

United Kingdom – Authorities have banned the annual Al-Quds Day march in London for the first time in more than a decade. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood approved the ban following a request by police, citing concerns over possible public disorder amid tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

Lavender and chamomile: These fragrances promote better sleep and relaxation after Taraweeh prayers.

Oud and sandalwood: These scents help reduce anxiety and enhance spiritual focus.

Frankincense: Known for boosting immunity and supporting respiratory health.

Using a light, alcohol-free perfume before prayer or diffusing essential oils at home can create a peaceful and uplifting environment.

Musk, mentioned in the Quran (83:26), is described as one of the pure fragrances of Jannah.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) never refused a gift of perfume and recommended its use on Fridays and before prayers.

The scent of sincerity is metaphorically stronger than perfume, good character leaves an impression long after one has left.

Quran Verse of the Day

“Indeed, the righteous will be in a pleasant place, among gardens and springs, wearing fine silk and brocade, facing each other. And We will join them with beautiful companions, giving them pure drink, sealed with musk. In this let the competitors compete!” (Surah Al-Mutaffifin 83:22-26)

Hadiths

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The example of a good companion and a bad one is like that of the seller of musk and the blacksmith. The musk seller either gives you some perfume, you buy some from him, or you enjoy his pleasant smell. But the blacksmith either burns your clothes or you experience an unpleasant smell.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2101, Sahih Muslim 2628)

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Beloved to me from your world are women and perfume, and the coolness of my eyes is in prayer.” (Sunan al-Nasa’i 3940)
