Hong Kong to Import Halal Food for Muslim Tourists: Minister

Hong Kong may need to import halal food to accommodate the influx of Muslim tourists it hopes to attract, Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk has said.

During an appearance on RTHK’s Overview Policy programme, Cheuk emphasized the city’s ambition to transform into a Muslim-friendly destination. As part of these efforts, halal-certified food might be sourced from overseas to meet dietary requirements.

“Hong Kong may not have many Muslims, but we need to make a lot of halal food. There are many Muslim countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and we can import restaurants and food from these nations,” Cheuk said.

This initiative builds on measures outlined in the Chief Executive’s Policy Address last year, which focused on boosting tourism by targeting visitors from the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

In addition to halal food imports, the government is taking steps to make Hong Kong more accessible for Muslim tourists. These include encouraging hotels to install prayer and worship facilities, as well as equipping taxi drivers with resources to provide information in Arabic, ensuring a more inclusive experience for travelers.

With these efforts, Hong Kong aims to position itself as a leading destination for Muslim tourists in the region.
