CIIN Urges Fair Islamic Inheritance to Protect Families

Experts calls for quick wealth distribution and care for vulnerable heirs during Ramadan lecture.

The Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) has emphasized on the importance of Islamic inheritance, urging families to share wealth fairly and quickly to avoid disputes and protect vulnerable heirs.

This was explained during her 2026 Ramadan Tafsir lecture, titled “What We Leave Behind: The Spirit and Purpose of Islamic Inheritance,”. Speakers emphasized that inheritance in Islam is not just about property but a duty rooted in fairness, compassion, and accountability.

Ameer Mayaleeke of Ad-Dawah Islamic Education Centre, Ijebu-Ode, said inheritance is a sacred responsibility that goes beyond material wealth. It is an act of worship in which following Islamic rules ensures everyone gets their fair share and prevents arguments,”.

He warned against delaying the distribution of estates, noting that leaving wealth unsettled for years can harm rightful heirs. He encouraged families to settle estates within months of a person’s death.

Mr. Mayaleeke also stressed that any debts owed by the deceased should be paid first and urged Muslims to write wills according to Islamic rules, which protect women, children, and the elderly.

He added that Muslims should leave lasting legacies by helping people, supporting charities, and building institutions.

CIIN President Yetunde Ilori described the lecture as a valuable tradition that teaches professionals to act with fairness and integrity. “The lecture makes us think about the legacy we leave behind, both personally and professionally,” she said, urging members to uphold honesty and fairness in all matters”, she added.
