UNICEF, WHO Deliver Over 250 Tons of Medical Aid to Afghanistan

Massive health support aims to bolster clinics across all 34 provinces

UNICEF has delivered more than 100 metric tons of essential medicine to Afghanistan, marking a significant infusion of medical support for over 2,400 health centers nationwide.

The shipment, which arrived this week via charter flights, was supported by the World Bank South Asia and the Asian Development Bank. According to UNICEF, the supplies will be distributed across all 34 provinces, helping maintain basic health services in public clinics and remote facilities.

The delivery follows a separate consignment by the World Health Organization (WHO), which brought in 154 metric tons of medical equipment and treatment kits. 

The WHO shipment includes critical supplies for combating measles, tuberculosis, and acute watery diarrhea — conditions that remain prevalent in several parts of the country.

Health workers say the supplies are urgently needed to stabilize clinic operations and prevent disease outbreaks. While basic health services remain functional in many regions, resource gaps and uncertain funding continue to pose risks to care delivery.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) recently warned that reductions in international aid — particularly from the United States — could jeopardize healthcare access for over 6 million people. Reproductive and maternal health programs are especially vulnerable, according to the agency.

Despite funding challenges, aid groups say continued support from international organizations remains essential to prevent disruptions in health services. UNICEF and WHO have pledged to maintain deliveries, while calling for sustained backing from donors to ensure long-term stability in the health sector.

The latest shipments represent one of the largest inflows of medical assistance to Afghanistan in recent months and will play a key role in keeping local clinics stocked and operational.
