US President Donald Trump has publicly attacked the Iranian nation with inflammatory remarks, as the United States, Israel, and their regional allies face a series of setbacks in the ongoing war against Tehran.
In a post on his platform Truth Social on Thursday, Trump labelled Iran “a lunatic nation,” highlighting the country’s resilience against what he framed as US-led aggression. “NATO nations have done absolutely nothing to help with the lunatic nation, now militarily decimated, of Iran,” he wrote in an all-caps message early Thursday morning. He also criticised the Western military alliance for failing to join the campaign, insisting: “The U.S.A. needs nothing from NATO, but ‘never forget’ this very important point in time!”
The remarks have prompted widespread scrutiny, with observers questioning why Trump seeks NATO support if, as he claims, Iran’s military infrastructure has been “obliterated” and its armed forces “weakened” by the US-Israeli campaign.
Dead-end strategy and domestic backlash
Analysts suggest that Trump’s comments reflect a growing frustration in Washington amid mounting economic and military pressures. The US-led war against Iran, initiated on February 28, has already contributed to rising energy prices and global food inflation, with the American public increasingly critical of the campaign.
Joe Kent, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, recently resigned in protest, stating that “Iran was not an imminent threat to the US” and blaming the “powerful Israeli lobby” for compelling the US president to launch hostilities. Kent described the conflict as one that “serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.”
The US and Israeli strikes targeted multiple Iranian sites, including civilian infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and sports halls, despite ongoing negotiations at the time. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory and American military installations in the region, signalling a robust retaliatory strategy.
Iran’s stance and international condemnation
Senior Iranian officials have condemned the attacks on civilian and cultural sites as “flagrant breaches of international humanitarian law and an undisputed war crime.” United Nations experts have similarly denounced the US-Israeli campaign, citing violations of international law.
The conflict has now entered a stage in which Iran’s military and strategic resilience is imposing heavy costs on its adversaries, both militarily and economically. Observers note that Trump’s social media outburst appears to be an effort to rally domestic and allied support at a time when conventional military measures have failed to achieve decisive outcomes.
Trump’s rhetoric underscores the increasingly personal and political nature of the US president’s engagement with the war, contrasting sharply with Tehran’s measured but firm defensive posture. While American officials project the image of a weakened Iran, the country’s continued resistance has exposed vulnerabilities in the US and Israeli operational planning, raising questions about the feasibility and sustainability of the current campaign.
