The enduring legacy of Hajiya Maryam Tajudeen

Two decades after her death, the life and legacy of Hajiya Maryam Bint Shaikh Tajudeen, widely known as Iya Omoda, continue to resonate within her family and community, remembered for her strong moral character, leadership and enduring influence.
In a reflective tribute, family members described her as a woman whose life was defined by discipline, integrity and an unwavering commitment to truth and justice, guided by Islamic teachings and personal conviction.
They recalled her as someone whose character remained consistent in both public and private life, principled, resolute and widely respected. Her reputation, they said, extended beyond those who knew her personally, earning recognition for honesty and fairness.
“She was a lover of truth and a defender of justice,” the tribute noted, portraying a figure who stood firm in her beliefs at a time when compromise was often the easier path.
Despite a reputation for firmness and high standards, she was also remembered for her compassion and concern for others, balancing discipline with a sense of fairness and care within her household and wider community.
Among her peers, she was regarded as a natural leader whose counsel was sought by both elders and younger generations. Her presence, relatives said, often brought clarity and direction in moments of uncertainty.
As a businesswoman, she was described as possessing strong entrepreneurial instincts and sound judgment, with a reputation for making careful decisions guided by ethical considerations.
Though she had no formal Western education, her family said she demonstrated intellectual depth, confidence and the ability to engage with scholars, reflecting what they described as a broader understanding of knowledge rooted in experience and faith.
Her role as a mother and matriarch was also highlighted, with relatives crediting her for instilling values of discipline, respect and responsibility in her children and extended family, shaping what they described as “generations of character”.
She died about 20 years ago, leaving what the tribute described as a lasting void, but also a legacy that continues to inspire.
“Her memory remains consistently positive,” the statement said, adding that those who knew her still speak of her with admiration and reverence.
Family members said her life remains a guiding example, urging younger generations to uphold values of integrity, courage and faith.
They offered prayers for her, asking that her legacy endure and that she be granted eternal peace.
