Sultan Raises Concern Over Borno Attack

The Sultan of Sokoto and spiritual head of Muslims in Nigeria, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has voiced serious concern over the recent bombings in Borno State, stating that Nigeria might be falling back to the period of insecurity many thought was over.

He made the remarks on Wednesday night at the Sultan’s Palace shortly after confirming the sighting of the new moon, which signaled the end of Ramadan and the declaration of Friday, March 20, 2026, as Eid-el-Fitr.

Speaking in his roles as President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and Jama’atu Nasril Islam, the Sultan denounces the fresh wave of attacks, urging the military and security agencies to step up efforts to tackle terrorism and insurgency.

He stressed that recent changes in military and security leadership should not be treated as mere formalities, but must lead into concrete action. According to him, security forces should take the fight directly to the terrorists’ hideouts rather than waiting to respond after attacks have occurred.

Also speaking as Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Council of Nigeria, he warned that the relocation of security chiefs must be purposeful and result-driven. He called for proactive strategies that will prevent attacks and restore confidence in the nation’s security framework.

The Sultan also described the violence as completely unrelated to Islamic teachings, insisting that such acts have no place in Islam and should never be linked to the religion.

He further urged the government to demonstrate firm political will in protecting lives and property across the country, regardless of ethnic or religious differences, and to eliminate criminal elements nationwide to sustain peace, unity, and development.

While acknowledging that communities may not always identify those behind the attacks, he reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace and moral values, and called on authorities to fulfill their responsibility of ensuring national security.

The Sultan concluded by offering condolences to the government and people of Borno State, the Kanem-Borno Emirate, and the families of victims, praying for the souls of the deceased and the speedy recovery of those injured.
