Stop Wishing Death for Your President; It Is Haram (Prohibited)

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger (Peace be upon him).

Fellow Nigerians! By the Grace of the Almighty Allah, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not die in office. He will complete his tenure, and those wishing him death will live to see it.

As Muslim, I honestly hate how some Nigerians are openly wishing death on him — it’s wrong, no matter how your political differences.

Dear brothers and sisters! Wishing death upon someone is strongly condemned and discouraged in Islam. The religion emphasises compassion, forgiveness, and seeking Allah’s mercy, even for those who have wronged others. Instead of wishing ill, Muslims are encouraged to pray for guidance, repentance, and peaceful resolution. Focusing on personal betterment and seeking Allah’s forgiveness for oneself and others is the path emphasised in Islamic teachings.

Respected brothers and sisters! Wallahi, Islam strongly discourages wishing death upon others, even those who have caused harm. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) taught that believers should seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for all, as stated in Hadith collections like Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Islamic teachings prioritise compassion, forgiveness, and seeking Allah’s mercy for all, including those who have made mistakes.

Instead of dwelling on negativity, Muslims are encouraged to focus on their own spiritual growth, seeking Allah’s forgiveness for their own shortcomings, and striving to be better individuals.

Pray for guidance and repentance for oneself and for others who have wronged.

If there is conflict, pray for a peaceful resolution and reconciliation.

If someone has experienced a loss, offer condolences and prayers for their well-being and for the deceased.

Remember that death is a reality for everyone, and focus on preparing for the afterlife by living a righteous life.

Strive to be a positive influence on others through your actions and words, and seek Allah’s forgiveness for your own mistakes.

The Noble Qur’an emphasises the importance of patience, forgiveness, and seeking Allah’s mercy.

And numerous Hadiths (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad) highlight the importance of kindness, compassion, and seeking Allah’s forgiveness.

Also many sincere and reliable Islamic scholars have consistently emphasised the importance of these values in various contexts, including interactions with others and the concept of mortality.

In essence, Islamic teachings encourage a positive and constructive approach to life, emphasising compassion, forgiveness, and striving for Allah’s mercy, rather than focusing on negativity or wishing harm or death upon others.

It is not allowed for anyone to wish death for somebody no matter how differences they may have.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymin, stated:

“When a person wishes for death for someone, he is doing something that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) has prohibited. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said:

“Let not one of you wish for death because of a misfortune which befalls him. If he cannot help doing so, he should say: ‘O Allah, keep me alive as long as You know that life is better for me, and make me die when death is better for me.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Therefore, it is not allowed for anyone to wish for death for someone because of some political differences they have. In fact, he should have patience and expect a reward from Allah for what he is passing through. He should also wait for relief to come, as the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) has said:

“… know that victory comes with patience, relief with distress and ease with hardship.” [Ahmad]

The one who is thinking about difficulties or hardships he is experiencing should know that those hardships expiate some of the sins that he has committed.

No believer is afflicted with any kind of worry, grief or pain except that Allah expiates sins for him due to that, even the pricking of a thorn.

When the person has patience and expects rewards from Allah, he reaches the stage of being among the patient. This stage is a very elevated stage. Allah has stated about its inhabitants:

“And give glad tidings to the patient. Who, when afflicted with calamity, say, ‘Truly, to Allah we belong and, truly, to Him we shall return.”‘ [Qur’an, 2:155-156]

Those people feels that there is no solution for their problems except in the death of President. I believe that this is a mistaken view. Death does not solve any problems. In fact, the situation of adversity may get even worse.

How many humans die while being afflicted with pain and problems but they had been wronging themselves and did not give up their sins and repent to Allah. Then his death is just a quicker coming of his punishment. If he remained alive, perhaps Allah would have guide him to repentance, seeking forgiveness, patience, facing the problem and expecting relief. This all would have been good for him.

Therefore, you must be patient and expect relief from Allah. Allah the Almighty says:

“So, verily, with the hardship there is relief. Verily, with the hardship, there is relief.” [Qur’an, 94:5-6]
