ATBU Honours Habiba

This piece is in honour of Hajiya Dr Habiba Muda Lawal, an esteemed administrator, a philanthropist, an intelligential, woman of substance, a gender advocate and a mentor to many. She will be honoured by the final year committee of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

The Final Year Committee of the 41st set of the famous Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, has invited Dr Habiba Muda Lawal to deliver a lecture in appreciation of her sterling contributions to the University.

She is to deliver the 2024 Final Year Public Lecture in the 1000-seater capacity hall to the members of the community and guests of the University. She speaks on Empowering Tomorrow; Leadership and Gender Equality in National Development and it is to be held on 20th July 2024, at the Yelwa campus of the University Bauchi.

Habiba, is an exceedingly intelligent woman, an Academic, a Public servant, a Civil Servant, a Gender advocate, and an administrator per excellence. She once served Bauchi State, her state of origin, as Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Tourism.

She started her working career as a Graduate Assistant at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and held various academic responsibilities such as a member of the University Senate, Departmental Exam Officer, Project/Records Officer, and Post Graduate Officer.

In 2001, she went on secondment from ATBU to the National Centre for Women Development, Abuja as Director of Planning Research and Statistics. She initiated and facilitated the development of the National Gender Policy and its Implementation Framework. She served as Senior Special Assistant to Mr. President on the Millennium Development Goals (OSSAP – MDGs). Diligently, she also served as the Director, Training and Development, in the Manpower Development Office of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

The pinnacle of her career was being appointed as a Federal Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service and served in different offices. She was the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Women & Social Development (FMWSD), Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (Special Services Office), Ministry of Science & Technology and Ecological Fund Office (EFO).

She also served the Nation, in the capacity of Acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation. After she retired from the civil service, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed her as Special Adviser to the President, on policy and coordination.

Iconic Habiba, a woman of grace and poise, remains a source of inspiration to many young women. She is a British Chevening Scholar, Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, Fellow of the Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD), Fellow, Chemical Society of Nigeria, Member, Science Association of Nigeria, Member, Institute of Development Administration and Chair of the Board of Trustees, an Alumni of America International Visitors Program.

Dr Habiba Muda Lawal, whose leadership style is recognized for breaking barriers is a beacon of excellence to many in Nigeria.
