Golden Words of Allah

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficient, The Most Merciful.

Praise be to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. Allah says concerning:

1. Divorce – One of the most beautiful things in this world given to mankind by Allah is marriage. Having someone to confide in, grow with, learn from, cry to, and so much more is an experience that can help one get closer to Allah. That being said, not all marriages end well due to many reasons. The spouses may not be compatible in lifestyle, drive, or culture. There could be uncontrolled emotions that lead to violence or abuse. Maybe the extended families do not get along whatsoever. Whatever the reason, it happens, and it is important to make dua and ask Allah to help during trying times. For this reason, Allah allows for divorce, but under his laws. There are many verses regarding the manners and actions one must take during a divorce to ensure that peace is maintained.

The Qur’an treats divorce as something permitted but not laudable. Reflecting this sentiment, it is reported that the Prophet Muhammad said that of all things permitted, divorce is the most hated by Allah.

Quranic verse: When you divorce women and they have ˹almost˺ reached the end of their waiting period, either retain them honourably or let them go honourably. But do not retain them ˹only˺ to harm them ˹or˺ to take advantage ˹of them˺. Whoever does that surely wrongs his own soul. Do not take Allah’s revelations lightly. Remember Allah’s favours upon you as well as the Book and wisdom He has sent down for your guidance. Be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things. [2:231]

Hadith: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Allah did not make anything lawful more abominable to Him than divorce. (Narrated by Muharib)

2. Pride – Pride and arrogance are destroyers of faith – it deeply cuts into one’s spirituality and can damage another’s feeling of well-being and happiness as well. As Muslims, it remains our duty to protect our morals of humbleness, respect, and empathy.

We must ensure we are continuously remembering our duty to treat everyone with the same feelings of respect we would expect from others. After all, we all are only servants of Allah and therefore have no right to harbor any feelings of pride or arrogance.

Quranic verse: “And do not turn your face away from people in contempt, nor go about in the land exulting overmuch; surely Allah does not love any self-conceited boaster” (Quran 31:18).

Hadith: Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When the people of Paradise will enter Paradise and the people of Hell will go to Hell, Allah will order those who have had faith equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed to be taken out from Hell. So they will be taken out but (by then) they will be blackened (charred). Then they will be put in the river of Haya’ (rain) or Hayat (life) (the Narrator is in doubt as to which is the right term), and they will revive like a grain that grows near the bank of a flood channel. Don’t you see that it comes out yellow and twisted”

3. Fate and Destiny – Two men of the tribe of Muzaina came to Allah’s Rasul (saw) and said: 

“O Allah’s Rasul, what is your opinion on what the people do in the world and strive for, is it something decreed for them; something preordained for them and will their fate in the Hereafter be determined by the fact that their Rasul brought them teachings which they did not act upon and thus they became deserving of punishment?”

Thereupon, he said: 

“Of course, it happens as it is decreed by fate and preordained for them, and this view is confirmed by this verse of the Book of Allah: 

By the self (the individual consciousness; identity) and the One who proportioned it (formed the brain); then inspired it as to what will lead it astray from the Truth and the system, and how to protect itself… (Quran91:7-8)”

Jabir reported that Suriqa b. Malik b. Ju’shuin came and said:

“Allah’s Rasul, explain our religion to us (in a way) as if we have been created just now. Whatever deeds we do today, is it because of the fact they have been predetermined and written, or is it our doing that determines them?”

Thereupon he said:

“Everything has been predetermined and written. The pens have dried and destinies have begun to operate.”

(Suraqa b. Malik) said: “If it is so, then what is the use of doing good deeds?”

Rasulullah said:

“Act, for everyone is facilitated for what he intends to do. He who does good will be facilitated towards the good.”(Muslim, Tirmidhi)

4. Stealing – The Quran is the primary source of Islamic law and promotes secure living for all human beings by fighting corruption which diverts society toward negative direction. Thieves who victimize and terrify people while secretly stealing from them pose a serious threat to society, its security, and safety. To overcome the cause, the Quran says that thieves should be punished in proportion to their actions, with the goal of reform and restraint, as well as preserving society’s security and stability.

The Qur’an explicitly prohibits theft (saraqq) and legislates the punishment thereto:

“And (as for) the man who steals and the woman who steals, cut off their hands as a punishment for what they have earned, an exemplary punishment from Allah, and Allah is Mighty. Wise. But whoever repents after his inequity and reforms (himself), then surely Allah will turn to him (mercifully), surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (Surah al-Ma’ida 5:38-39).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the thief because he is a corrupt element in society, and if he is left unpunished, his corruption will spread and infect the body of the ummah.
What indicates that this ruling is definitive is that fact that a Makhzoomi noblewoman stole at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and Usaamah ibn Zayd wanted to intercede for her. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) became angry and said, “Do you intercede concerning one of the hadd punishments set by Allaah? Those who came before you were destroyed because if a rich man among them stole, they would let him off, but if a lowly person stole, they would carry out the punishment on him. By Allaah, if Faatimah bint Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.” (Bukhari)
